Great run yesterday down to the Gold Coast around 5 hours return journey. gravitas lost is a mixture of terracotta and white clay bodies, colour is stains, and engobe – once fired to 1100. 50 x 25 x 25 cm

From here, it looks like this figure’s head is very porous as if it were carved from chalk.
Yes I can see what you mean – I hadn’t thought about it looking like something other than clay. I have deliberately left this head ‘raw’ looking no smoothing out or ‘finishing’ the head in any way – I applied the black stain while the clay was still damp – not quite leather hard – so that it was almost absorbed into the clay and didn’t try to wash/wipe off any of it. There is also some terracotta clay smeared on top of the white clay head. Once fired to 1100 degrees.
So full of wonderful form and expression, although I can’t help thinking the face and hands are wearing scattered gunshot.
thanks Patti – I am trying to make more of a feature of the incomplete surface – for me it might be a way of revealing more of what simmers away beneath – or perhaps allowing the soul to breathe !
